Poem – White Butterflies

Poem published in the Greek-Australian Cultural League’s 2018 Periodical Antipodes.

‘White Butterflies’ is about the persona’s ongoing grief over the loss of a grandparent, and missing them leading up to a milestone in their lifetime.

The poem explores the concept of dementia and Alzheimer’s in our modern world, the relationships between grandmothers and granddaughters, and the formal Greek word for butterflies in ancient Greece – psyche.

It also delves into the mystical ideas of the human soul and spirit, the signs of butterflies in philosophy and mythology, and the unexplained phenomena in our lives, especially in times of change.

I decided it was time I cathartically dealt with the loss of my grandmother, Yiayia Claire, back in 2015 through my writing. My poem has provided me with a moment of peace.
