Short Story – Helike: Video of Gianna Stefanatou Reading at The Helike V Conference

Hi Everyone, I’m so excited to announce that the video I have been waiting for of the actress Gianna Stefanatou reading my short story ‘Helike’ at the Helike V Conference on the 4th of October 2013 at the University of Patras in Greece is out! Although my short story was read in Greek, the pace and how the story was read with emotional intensity was brilliant, along with the beautiful piano playing. I’m ecstatic! Wish I was there. It’s wonderful to see my short story brought to life. Best wishes to the Helike Society! 2014 Historical Genre – Popularity On The Rise

Hi Everyone, The post I wrote about Historical Epics– Films and the Genre has me thinking about all the new films coming out in 2014. There are so many historical films like: Noah (one of many) Pompeii (one of many) Sparta: Rise Of An Empire Hercules: The Legend Begins Atlantis – new TV series And I have to mention Katy Perry’s music video ‘Dark Horse’ depicts Ancient Egypt! There is so much going on with historical mass production, I feel like it is on steroids at the moment. Maybe not the best simile. But I think it has something to … Continue reading 2014 Historical Genre – Popularity On The Rise

Writerly Update, January & February: My Third Novel and Lots of Editing

Hi Everyone, On the 23rd of January 2014, Day 85 of writing my Third Novel – I finally finished my First Draft on 96,660 words! I have been waiting for this day ever since I started NaNoWriMo, all the way back in November. It has been a great help structuring my writing life around Twitter, having people see that I am constantly updating my word count online, using social media to push me forward to the deadline. I knew my novel was going to exceed 80,000 words, and be close to 100,000 words – it was great to know I … Continue reading Writerly Update, January & February: My Third Novel and Lots of Editing

Historical Epics – Films and the Genre

When I was growing up, I watched Historical Epic Films such as Spartacus, King of Kings, The Ten Commandments, Ben-Hur, Cleopatra, Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger, The Golden Voyage of Sinbad, The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, and Jason and the Argonauts. And I cannot forget, that whenever I went over my grandfather’s house, we would sit in front of the television and watch video tapes that recorded the TV series of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, and Xena: The Warrior Princess. I did a unit in my third undergraduate year called, Genre Writing, and I engaged more with the … Continue reading Historical Epics – Films and the Genre

Ancient Greek Toys and Games – They had Dolls too

While writing my Third Novel that is based in Classical Greece, I had to think about my characters upbringing, their parents, siblings, the city-states they lived in, and the different events that effected their childhoods. And then I realized, how did the Ancient Greek kids have fun? A lot of our evidence comes from pictures on pottery vases and artefacts. Types of Toys and Games: Dolls Made from rags, wood, wax and clay Some dolls had moveable arms and legs Rattles, Hoops, Yo-yos, Hobby horses, Toy wagons Juggling wool or apples Balls made from rags or blown-up pig’s bladder Knucklebones made from ankle-bones … Continue reading Ancient Greek Toys and Games – They had Dolls too

NaNoWriMo 2013 Winner: Nike – Greek-Winged Goddess of Victory

Hi Everyone, I am excited to announce that on the 24th of November 2013 I completed NaNoWriMo with my Third Novel. I’m still writing it, knowing it will be double in length, but I am overjoyed that I actually completed NaNoWriMo. I stuck to what I was doing, writing every day, and even though it was hard, I knew it had to be done. Writing 1,667 words everyday is two pages of writing, depending on the line spacing you use. Two pages is not hard, but constantly writing, non-stop, can drive you crazy. Somehow I got it done and I … Continue reading NaNoWriMo 2013 Winner: Nike – Greek-Winged Goddess of Victory

Photo of Me by Effy Alexakis, Photowrite: http://www.photowrite.com.au/ Hi Everyone, It is Day 21 of NaNoWriMo, I am over the 40,000 word mark, sitting on 43,615 words! Cannot believe I have made it this far. The first week was a breeze, motivation high, writing every day, finished all uni assignments, then week 2 hit and BAM. Motivation dropping, but I needed to keep going and keep going, nearly there. Now finally, I’m doing the last 10,000 words left till I hit the 50k! Unbelievable. At the beginning, the month felt like it was going slow, but looking back now, it … Continue reading Over the 40,000 word mark for NaNoWriMo
